Is Minoxidil Safe to Use by Women?

One of the biggest questions that needs to be answered before using Minoxidil if you are a woman is whether Minoxidil is safe to use by women. While the general consensus is that it is safe for use by men with minimal side effects, for women, the question of its use is more of an issue. The problem of whether Minoxidil is safe for women can be divided into two main parts; firstly, whether it is safe for women in general, and secondly, whether it is safe for use by pregnant women. Though the FDA has stated that women should not use and in some cases even handle the drug, some dermatologists believe that it is safe to use and that any possible side effects are of minimal concern. Added to this many websites state explicitly that it is safe for use by women. In the end it comes down to the question of who you trust more; the government or the internet. This division of belief, however, does not clear up the issue of whether it is safe to use. When looking at products that contain Minoxidil a good piece of advice is that you should be aware of which studies the product is basing its statements on. Is it claiming that its product is safe for use by women on studies that it has conducted itself? Or is it basing it on studies done by an independent source (though even then you should be aware of who is sponsoring the research as this has been an on-going issue for many products). While you should not immediately discount those that do, you need to be aware that there is some disparity on the issue of whether Minoxidil is safe for use by women. The problem is compounded further by the presence of higher percentage solutions; very few companies do them and because of its additional strength the question of its use by women is even greater. Furthermore there is evidence that Minoxidil can cause reduced conception rates.
