Gastric Banding - Easyband System (Telemetric Adjustable Gastric Band (TAGB) - Obesity Surgery Guide

The ‘Easyband' is also known as the Telemetric Adjustable Gastric Band (TAGB).  It is the latest development in the field of gastric band systems and as such is only available through one company in the UK – Healthier Weight Centres.

The main difference between this and the other two systems is that this uses electronic technology.  It still uses a silicone ring and tubing but instead of containing saline solution it contains a small metal loop instead.  Plus there is a tiny motor which is connected to a computer chip.

This band has a thin wire attached to it and is fastened around the upper part of the stomach in much the same way as the LAP-BAND and Realize systems.  This wire is then attached under the skin of the chest area.  This wire contains a tiny receiver at the chest end.
To adjust the band the surgeon uses a handheld device.  He/she presses a button on this device which then sends a signal via a transmitter placed on the patient's chest.  This signal is read by the implanted receiver which in turn, sends this signal down the wire and into the ring.  The microchip in that ring reads the signal which causes it to reduce the size of the ring.

And, any information regarding the current size of the ring is sent back to the surgeon which allows him/her to monitor any changes.

This system is still seen as experimental.
